Congress passes bill to help save Internet radio — Congress has cleared the way for a potential agreement intended to save the emerging Internet radio market from a crippling hike in copyright royalty rates.

Why did your favourite radio station stop offering a streaming audio netcast?

Because they can't afford it!

2008: It has been a year since SAVE NET RADIO defeated a crippling royalty rate increase for webcasters and delayed the death of Internet radio. In spite of the public outcry to preserve the future of Internet radio and in spite of growing support in Congress – more than 150 co-sponsors of the Internet Radio Equality Act – the industry is still facing extinction. Congress has still not held a hearing on the IREA, they have still not forced SoundExchange to honor their pledge to negotiate in good faith with commercial webcasters, and time is running out.

In the last 12 months, deals have been cut between SoundExchange and Internet radio’s closest competitors – satellite and cable radio – that set their royalty rates at less than half of what webcasters pay. Being asked to pay an irrationally and unjustifiably higher royalty rate than its competition puts Net radio at a significant competitive disadvantage, but these deals do seem to have established the “price of music” for non traditional radio providers, a price we are more than happy to pay.

SAVE NET RADIO needs your help to remind Congress that though Internet radio is still on the air and artists are still being paid for their work by webcasters, nothing has been resolved and we need them to act. Call your Senators and your Representative and ask them to co-sponsor the Internet Radio Equality Act, H.R. 2060 and S. 1353. All the information you need is on the Save Net Radio Website.

The idea is to get your listeners to contact their senators and congressmen to repeal this legislation. Listeners are directed also to http://savenetradio.org where they can send a message to these representatives. If we don't get the word out and take action we will be driven off the internet as broadcasters forever. We urge you to get involved in this campaign.
